About Sefla Fuhrman
Sefla Fuhrman is a gifted, compassionate, and hardworking professional educator dedicated to assisting people from all walks of life to achieve their goals and dreams. She strives to identify what distinguishes people, where their talents lie, and how to maximize them in pursuit of their long-term goals.
Growing up, Sefla Fuhrman knew she wanted to spend her life helping others. This was evident even during her secondary school years. She was always one of the first to volunteer for projects and was always willing to help her classmates with whatever they needed. She grew up hearing stories about her mother's cousin, a member of one of the first Peace Corps Volunteers groups, and she knew she wanted to do the same. So she earned a BA in Anthropology from the University of Washington in 1996.
Sefla Fuhrman joined the Peace Corps immediately after graduation and worked as an English as a Foreign Language teacher in Guinea, West Africa, for two years. She also honed her grant-writing and community development skills, securing funds to build an elementary school, a grant to assist two women's cooperative gardening groups in two separate villages, spearheading the country's first seed bank, and receiving funds to acquire books for the empty library and librarian training. Sefla Fuhrman was also a representative for the Women in Development group in Guinea, which helps women attend school, gain the necessary training to start small businesses and address health care access.
She earned her Master of Arts in Public Administration from Syracuse University in 2001. She worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Anthropology department and the Empowering Girls Program Manager for Girls Inc. of Central New York. Sefla Fuhrman received a highly competitive Management Analyst Internship with Clark County in Las Vegas, NV, shortly after graduation. During her time in graduate school and Las Vegas, she learned how to apply her skills for the greater good, combining what she learned in the classroom with real-life experience.
Sefla Fuhrman received her PhD in Urban Studies from the University of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana. Hurricane Katrina, one of the costliest hurricanes in US history, significantly impacted her time in New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina delayed her PhD completion by a decade, but this did not deter her. She lost all her material possessions due to the natural disaster and had to start over to rebuild her life. Nonetheless, she was committed to demonstrating the resilience of women in nontraditional fields through her PhD, and she completed the program successfully. She completed her degree despite the hurricane's delays while contributing resources to those in need.
Furthermore, Fuhrman's mother wrote a book about her, discussing the effects of Hurricane Katrina from a cat's perspective. The Adventures of Koubla combines Fuhrman's love of cats with Katrina's massive impact on New Orleans residents. This is an excellent book for people of all ages that demonstrate Fuhrman's passion for the region.
She completed dissertation research on women and nontraditional occupations while pursuing her doctorate. She interviewed a wide range of people to learn more about what it was like to pursue a career that was not considered "traditional" for women, as well as the obstacles they had to overcome and strategies they could share with others looking to build a career in similar fields. She also conducted phone polls to look for common themes and cross-sections in society, gaining knowledge she could apply to other aspects of her work. She also did fieldwork in the construction industry, where she learned what it was like to be a woman attempting to make a career in a male-dominated field. She learned a tremendous amount during her dissertation research and successfully defended her thesis to earn her PhD.
Sefla Fuhrman has over 25 years of combined teaching and training experience. She devotes significant time to developing curricula for various lessons and focus areas. She has also contributed to the creation of extensive participant progress monitoring systems. She has worked with people of all ages and skill levels and large and small groups. She has been heavily involved in converting courses from paper-based to electronic classes throughout her teaching career. Converting systems to digital format makes them more accessible to students of all levels.
She also has over 25 years of experience working in the public and private sectors. She works with various populations, assisting them in raising funds, budgeting appropriately, writing grants, and coordinating multiple programs to ensure they benefit as many people as possible. She also assists these programs in meeting tight deadlines to consistently meet or exceed expectations.
